Why do people let other tell them what they do or don't like?
Why are there movie critics? How do they keep their jobs? Do people not realize that opinions of others mean shit? For instance, I'm sure you guys out there know that this rant here is simply my opinion and that no one really gives a shit on what I think about movie critics. People might agree with me and people might disagree. But you know what? I don't really care and neither should anyone else.
Movie critics aren't experts in movies so why the hell should we give a shit about what they think about movies? No one are experts in movies. Movies are purely subjective to whomever who watches them. It's like poetry and shit. Some people see things differently.
"Oh, but other people seem to share the same opinions as I do. Doesn't that mean something?" you say?
So what? Just because many people seem to agree with you, that doesn't mean they're all right. Many people believed smoking was great back then. Many people think the 'swastika' is evil even though it represents prosperity and such. I think people who readily follow other people's opinions can be easily manipulated. Take Hitler for instance. Many people truly believed in his opinions that Jews are inferior humans compared to them. Look where that led to?
Just because more people seem to like something doesn't mean it's good. For instance, take 'Spider-Man: The Movie'. Holy shit, I think that movie blew. I'm sure there are people out there that will readily disagree. Anyway, that movie made soooo much money. What does that mean? Does coming out as a huge box office success mean a movie is really good? Hell no! Popularity doesn't mean worthwhile content. I think 'Spider-Man' sucked.
Have you guys ever heard of a movie called 'Frequency'? Probably not because it never made it big in the movies. It barely made a blip on the radar. However, to me, even though that movie wasn't a huge box office success, I think it was a damn fine movie.
For instance, I like neither 'The Matrix' nor 'The Lord of the Rings' nor 'Harry Potter' movies. I think they're decent movies, perhaps above average, but not along the lines of amazing. I don't think they deserve the praise they constantly get. People rant and rave about how good those movies are, but frankly, I don't care. Sure, my opinions might clash with yours, but the thing you need to know is that opinions are opinions. I've seen 'The English Patient' and 'Dances With Wolves' and I disliked both of those movies and found them boring. Oh, but those movies received several Academy Awards. Y'know what? I don't give a shit. Why? Because they're based on the opinions of others.
Want another example? I don't particularly care for the Final Fantasy series. I don't think it's all that grea. However, I know people who swear by that series and how great it is. This helps prove to people how opinions seem to differ from people to people and that trying to base your own opinion on someone else's opinion is not the way to go.
What's funny is that we have people like 'Bill O' Reilly' who has a show that basically centers around his opinions, 'The O'Reilly Factor'. And what's funny is that people actually believe everything he says, as if his opinions really matter. I betcha there are people out there that really have no opinions about something in general and watch his show and then suddenly have an opinion of something based on what he said.
Using someone's opinion as a way of developing your own opinion on something is stupid.
