Jeffrey "OneShot" Wong Sailor Moon: The final night The moon was shining brightly over Tokyo that night, its light ominous and sullen. The leaves on the trees swayed back and forth that night as the gentle winds blew through the streets. The streets were empty, most of the residents home, sleeping peacefully under their blanket, all nice and warm, not a care in the world. The night was quiet, only the rustling trees breaking that silence. That was how it would look to the average person whom happened to have looked out their window. It would look like a peaceful night. But it was anything but peaceful that night. It was a night where the lives of many would forever change. Usagi lay motionless on the gurdey as the medical team wheeled her into the hospital. Her face and outfit was covered with blood, most of it belonging to the opponent she had defeated, but some of it also belonging to her. Her kness were bloody, layers of skin having been torn off from the landing when she made that heroic dive to save Rei's life. Her hands were raw and bleeding, for thee were only thing that kept her from hitting the pavement at full force. Her hair was matted to her forehead from the dried up blood. Her tiara was bvlood-stained, no longer as glittering in the moonlight as it used to be. As the medical team wheeled the unconscious Usagi through the corridors of that vast hospital, the other Sailor Senshi were following suit. Tears were flowing from all of their eyes, they never having been in a situation like this, none of them ever having been hurt this badly. Ami's heart raced like the rest of the Senshi. In her hands, she held Usagi's moon scepter. The scepter was held close to her chest, a form of symbolism that their hearts will be on her recovery. Ami was unaware that tears fell from her crystal blue eyes, dropping off her chin, and onto the scepter. Makoto seemed to be taking this better than most of them. Albeit tears fell from her eyes, they weren't flowing as freely as the rest of them. She was confident that Usagi would be all right. They had been in situations as bad than this, and they had come out all right. She remembered the time when Tuxedo Kamen had died in Usagi's arms when Zoisite tried to kill Usagi, Tuxedo kamen having jumped in front of her to take the killing blow. He recovered from that mortal wound. Makoto quickly snapped back from her little reverie, realizing that her mind shouldn't be wandering at a delicate time like this. Minako's head was buried in one of Rei's arms. The blond could recall the times when she and Usagi spent time together, getting to know each other. She remembered the time when she went over to Usagi's house, on hopes of bringing Usagi out of her slump when she lost Momaru to the Dark Kingdom. She recalled the time they spent when she offered to give Usagi's a makeover, to perhaps give her a new look by getting rid of her dumpling-like hairstyle. Salior Venus immdeiately recovered, snapping back from her memories. Albeit she was back to reality, her tears never stopped flowing. Rei looked at Minako as she contnued to cry. Rei was in the worse shape of all, but she never showed it. Inside, she was a wreck. Her insides churned from the thought that she might never see Usagi again. She regretted ever having been mean to her and critical of her irresponsiblities. She now knew just how dedicated and loyal a friend Sailor Moon was, she having risked her life to save someone who always yelled and argued with her. She remembered watching as Usagi took that blast full force, sacrificing her body as a shield to protect her, watching in horror as Usagi was sent sprawling to the stone pavement, unmoving, seeing her body twitch a few times before going limp. Why did she hafta do that? Rei thought to herself. She didn't have to go out and act like a hero. At that thought, Rei couldn't believe what she was thinking. How could she dare have thoughts like those when her friend was in need? The Sailor Senshi watched as their friend, Usagi, was wheeled into the emergency room. They were about to follow her in until they were told by a nurse to wait in the waiting room, a room on the other side of the entire hospital. "No," Rei said "I want to be there, to see if she's all right" "I'm sorry," one of the nurses said, a bit nervous with the thought of having to restraint the black-haired girl "I can't let you in. The emergency room is authorized to no one but hospital personnel. I can't let you or your friends in" The nurse was a bit surprised when she saw Rei bite her lip and storm off towards the waiting room. She watched as the other Senshi gave her a pleading look, and then headed off with Rei. The nurse couldn't help but wonder just how much pain those girls must have been going through, seeing a friend in such a horrible physical state. She felt extreme symapthy towards those girls, knowing that no one should ever go through what they were going through right now. The images of each of the Sailor Senshi's visage was burned into the nurses mind. Sighing to herself, the nurse turned around, and then entered the emergency room where she was needed. "We can't do anything" Minako said, desperately trying to calm Rei down "We've done all that we can, now it's time to let the doctors take over" "C'mon, Rei, there's nothing elase we could do" Makoto concurred "All we could do is wait" Rei sighed, knowing it was true, there was nothing else they could do. She sat down in one of the lush couches that furnished the waiting room, placing her face in the hands, hiding the tears as she started to cry. "Rei, wake up" came a voice. Rei felt a nudge at her side, which caused her to open her eyes, her eyes focusing on the figure standing before her, Ami. "Huh, what's goin' on?" Rei asked, a bit puzzeled. She had the most horrible dream where Usagi had sustained a mortal wound and they desperately waited in the waitingroom for the news on her condition. Rei's dream turned into a nightmare when she realized exactly where she was. Anxiety overwhelmed her when she realized she actually was in the waitingroom. "Is she all right?" Rei asked, concern in her voice. She felt extremely guilty when she realized she had fallen asleep. But her guilt decreased when she saw Minako and Makoto sleeping on seperate couches. "Yes, the doctor just told me" Ami said "He told me that it's okay if we want to go see here now. "W-what time is it?" she asked. "It's around four in the morning" came the reply. Rei couldn't believe the time. They had arrived at the hospital at around midnight, and now it over four hours had passed. She must have fallen asleep at around one in the morning. Time felt like it zoomed by. "C'mon, it's okay to go visit Usagi now" Ami said, a bit on the bright side. She could always find something optimistic from the worst situations "C'mon, lets wake Minako and Makoto up now so when can go see her right away" she added. In the far corner of the room, there was a dim light that shone over a motionless figure. Usagi was lying in a bed, and was sleeping. Next to the bed, there was metal stand that held a intravenous bag, which slowly dripped its medicine into the tube that lead to her fully bandaged arm. On the other side of the bed, there was another metal stand. This one was holding a blood of whole blood, which was dripping down at a constant rate, into a tube that was attached to her other arm by a needle. There were massive amounts of bandages that wrapped around her head, one of her eyes covered over by them. There was a tube under her nose that had two additional tubes that went into her nose. Both of her legs were bandaged up all the way to the top of her thighs. Nearby, there was a respirator, its gentle whirring breaking the silence of the room. There was an electrocardiograph nearby, monitoring and recording her weak heartbeat. Rei took the sight in and was disturbed to her very core. She couldn't believe how horrible Usagi's injuries were. She couldn't believe Usagi actually risked her life to save her. She had always treated her badly, always complaining about her irresponsiblity, her lack of leadership. But now, as she gazed down at the broken body of Usagi, all her pent up anger disappeared. She now knew that she had underestimated Usagi, and for that, she was actually glad. She was glad to have a friend like her. "Usagi" Makoto said softly, gently giving her a nudge "Are you all right?" Usagi slowly opened her one good eye, her pupil easily adjusting the the dim light she was under. She said nothing, but instead, gave a weak smile. But the smile disappeared as a surge of pain surged through her body. But she never showed it. She hid the pain, not wanting to let her friends know how horrible she felt. She didn't want to cause her friends anymore grief as it is. "I'm.....fine" she said in a soft yet barely audible voice. Her voice sounded dry. She tried to sit upright, but stopped only halfway, her brain sending signals to her body tell her it was too much of an effort to do. "You better rest" Rei said. She placed a hand on Usagi's shoulder, gently giving it a squeeze to emphasize her words. Usagi said nothing, a bit surprised to hear those words from Rei's lips. She always assumed Rei disliked her and hearing those words was quite a surprise. She looked up into Rei's eyes and saw the sincerity. "I will" Usagi replied, lying back down. "You gave us quite a scare there" Makoto said. "Yeah, we thought you weren't goin' to make it" Ami added. "Right now, we're glad you're okay," Minako said "and that's all that matters" "Thanks guys" Usagi said, blushing a bit. She was glad to have friends like them, always by her side, always there when she needed them. She then noticed Makoto pulling up several chairs "What're you doin' Mako-chan?" "Oh, I'm pulling up some chairs" she replied as a matter of factly "We're goin' to spend the night here" "No, don't" Usagi said "I want you to go home and tell my parents I'm all right" "Are you sure?" they asked in unison. "Don't you want us here?" Minako added. "Of course I want you here, but I think it's better you head on back so you can tell my parents" Usagi said "Besides, I would like a little time alone.....you know, to think over what had just happened" "Are you absolutely sure?" Rei asked again, she really wanted to be by her side. She pretty much owed her her life, and felt a little guilty about leaving her. "Yeah, I'm sure" came the reply. "Fine, but we'll be here first think in the morning" Minako said, giving Usagi a friendly wink. "Yeah, and I'm definitely lookin' forward to it" Usagi said with a smile. "C'mon," Ami said, almost outside in the hallway "lets leave Usagi alone so she could rest" With that said the group all gave Usagi a gentle hug before they left the room. Outside in the hallway, as the four girls were about to leave the hospital, Rei suddenly realized something. "Guys, can you hold up for a sec?" Rei said as she headed back down the hallway towards Usagi's room "I'll be right back" "What're you doin'?" Makoto asked. "I forgot to thank Usagi for what she did" "Usagi" Usagi opened her one good eye again. "What's wrong?" she asked "I thought you left already" "No, I came back" Rei replied. "How come?" Rei sighed as she dug deep into her self to bring up those words "I just wanted to come back to thank you.....for all that you've done. Please, get better ya hear. We don't want to lose you. We need you" Usagi noticed tears forming around Rei's eyes. "Don't worry 'bout it, Rei" Usagi said "I'll be fine" "Okay then, take care. I'll be back first thing in the morning" Rei said, giving Usagi a gentle hug, before she headed for the door. "I'm lookin' forward to your visit" Usagi said, right before she closed her eyes and went to sleep. "G'night" Rei said softly as she left the room. Out in the hallway, Rei caught up with the group, and they all left the hospital together, intent on coming back in several hours to check up on their friend. It's too bad they never stayed by her side, even if it was against her wishes because...... That night, Usagi died. OneShot strikes again ;) If ya read any of my other works, especially the Maison Ikkoku one, then you would've seen this coming from a mile away. Besides, the title should've given it away. First off, without Naoko Takeuchi, I would've never've written this fanfic. Second, I hope you enjoyed reading the story. I hope it had some form of impact on how you view Usagi, no matter how minute. I'm sorry if the ending seems rushed; I was starting to get impatient. Also, I'm sorry for any grammatical or spelling errors. Please send comments. I would really appreciate it. PS-If you want any of my other fanfics, please let me know. Jeffrey "OneShot" Wong
